How can we help our little ones develop a lifelong love of reading?

The early years are the perfect time to introduce the magic of books. So, let’s dive into some fun and easy ways to help your little one develop a love for reading that’ll last a lifetime.

1. Start with Picture Books (and Lots of Them!)

Picture books are the superheroes of early literacy. They're visually stimulating and full of engaging stories, which makes them perfect for little learners. You don’t have to read the book word-for-word (though you can!). Instead, use the pictures to spark conversations and interactions, point to objects, label them aloud and ask questions like, “What do you think will happen next?”

The more you read, the more your little one will associate books with fun!

2. Read Aloud Every Day

Consistency is key. The more you read to your child, the more they’ll start to understand that books are a special, enjoyable activity. Even if it’s just for 10 minutes, reading aloud daily is super important. You can make it part of your bedtime routine - that special moment you share when they get snuggled up and ready for storytime; it’s a peaceful way to wind down the day and your child will start to look forward to these cozy moments with you.

3. Make It Interactive

Engage your child while reading; if the story is about animals, make animal sounds together - if they’re learning numbers, count the characters or objects on each page. Ask questions about the story to involve them in the action. Books can come alive when they feel like part of the adventure!

4. Let Them Pick Their Own Books

It’s great for you to pick out books you know they’ll enjoy, but giving your little one the freedom to choose their own books is a game-changer. 5. Be a Reading Role Model

Kids learn by watching us, so if you want to develop a love of reading in your little one, show them that you enjoy reading too! Whether it’s a magazine, a novel, or even reading aloud a recipe, your child will see how much fun reading can be for grown-ups too. Bonus points if you can make it a cozy family activity, with everyone curled up with their own book (or with you reading to them).

6. Create a Reading Nook

Having a dedicated spot for reading can make books feel extra special. Create a little reading corner at home, whether it’s a comfy chair with pillows, a cozy blanket fort, (a Story Tent!) or just a spot by the window. Add a few shelves or baskets stocked with books within your child’s reach. When kids have their own space to explore and enjoy stories, it fosters independence and excitement for reading and a cozy space helps them to feel safe, secure, relaxed and ready to read!

7. Embrace Repetition

Your little one might want to hear the same story over and over (and over!) again. You might feel like you’re stuck in a loop, but (whilst it might get a bit tedious on the 500th time through A Squash and a Squeeze - Norah’s choice for months!), this is actually a GOOD thing! Repetition builds confidence, and when your child knows the story well, they can start "reading" it with you. Plus, repeated readings help kids make connections and develop their vocabulary; so let them hear that beloved book until it’s well-worn! 

8. Celebrate Reading Milestones

Celebrate your child’s reading accomplishments, no matter how small! Whether they’ve memorized a story, can point to words, or simply sit quietly flipping through a book on their own, make a big deal out of it. Positive reinforcement creates a sense of pride and excitement around reading.
